September has been a busy month here at Evergreen. Not only have we had our normal visits and projects for our arable farming clients who have been completing the last of their crop cuts, but we have had new schools with pest rabbit issues, final planning stages for a Welsh Conservation Group (more on this in a future blog!) and also helping to support a group of vineyards that found various forms of wildlife also taking a fancy to their delicious crop!
The vineyards were being ransacked daily by unwanted pest visitors of deer rabbit and badger. These animal visitors found that they were able to enjoy a free and tasty treat until Evergreen stepped in. As the grapes ripened, badgers travelled from surrounding areas to feast on the fruit meaning yields were being greatly reduced which left unaddressed would result in massive profit reductions due to this expensive harvest.
Repairing and replacing all the old and damaged fencing as well as installing a substantial electric deterrent has served to keep the larger pests away from the area. Our experienced team of dog and ferret handlers combined with a robust netting plan quickly addressed the rabbit problem.
We continue to work closely with the management team onsite to monitor the situation as we measure our results. Determined badgers are a force to be reckoned with and will test us but so far we are keeping them out!
Soon the next issue will be birds flocking to the area and we will be ready to deploy our birds of prey to secure the skies around the crops further adding to the complete service that Evergreen are able to offer to our wide range of clients and locations.
