Here at Evergreen, we have been seeing the rising problems being caused by wild deer for some time now.
It is hardly surprising when you think that their numbers are predicted to be at a population peak for the last 1000 years!
With limited predators and less reliance on them by humans as a food source, combined with the ever growing urbanisation within the UK they are finding themselves forced into situations that perhaps they would not of in years past.
We recently assisted a very high profile golf course in the south east of England to resolve a fallow deer problem. The deer had been rutting and causing damage not only to the extremely well cared for and expensive greens but it was noted that younger trees in the conservation area had also been damaged to the point of needing replacement.
During the rutting, damage was caused by hoof and antler not only creating additional workload for the grounds keepers but more importantly causing grave concern from the loyal members and the impact to the courses very valued reputation as being at the pinnacle of the game.
We worked closely with the grounds and management teams to avoid disturbance to the golfing members and their visitors alike whilst removing a number of the deer.
Some deer still remain, adding character and a rural feel to the environment. A further follow up call will probably be required in the near future to continue to control the population numbers and the level of damage that may be created in the future.
It is also worth noting that after close inspection of the carcases, all of the deer that we removed have been professionally butchered and sold for human consumption as wild venison, with no wastage at all.
