We were recently contracted to heavily reduce a rabbit problem across 500 acres of farmland. The aim of our task was to reduce the population enough to allow soon to be planted saplings, the chance to grow.

Thankfully the weather was on our side and our team worked tirelessly through the day and night to gain the required results within the agreed time frame of 5 days.

Through the day we utilised detection dogs to locate rabbits across the farm. Not only did we find rabbits in warrens and dry stone walls, but also in more weird and wonderful places around farm buildings such as underneath haylage bales, under pallets and in drainage. We utilised our team of ferrets to flush the rabbits into nets and worked methodically across the farm ensuring the job was done thoroughly.

By night we worked across the farm on foot with night vision and thermal imaging equipment along with suitable firearms for the job at hand. In such a situation we tend to start with smaller calibres such as FAC air rifles, and progress to rimfires such as the 17HMR because as the rabbit population decreases, they get harder to approach as they become aware of our goals! When this happens we often switch to centre fire rifles such as the .204 , 222 or 223 to target the limited stragglers at longer distances .

By the end of the week we removed over 500 rabbits which was approximately 80% of the population, we will do further checks and culls later in spring.
